10 Problems With Marvel's Phase 4 (And How To Solve Them)

2. Is The Mighty Thor Going To Involve A Transformation?

It’s exciting that Marvel Studios will be bringing a version of the Mighty Thor to the MCU. Jane Foster’s heroic apotheosis has featured in some of Marvel’s best books over the last few years. However, it does raise the question of how they’re going to pull it off.

In the comics, Jane Foster has cancer and physically transforms into an Amazonian Asgardian female when wielding the hammer, in a nod to the way Thor used to transform from Dr Donald Blake into the God of Thunder back in the early days of the character.

Currently, Jane is the Valkyrie in her own series - and there too she transforms physically into an Asgardian form, becoming taller and heavier (and growing her hair out from the I’m-in-remission pixie cut).

The cache of bringing Natalie Portman back to the MCU would be lessened if they had her morph into a different woman when becoming a superhero.

There’s always the possibility that CG imagery and the magic of motion capture could be used to transform Portman in post-production. This would allow her to still play both aspects of the part while changing height, mass and musculature. This isn’t as much of a cop out as it appears: it’s not like Brie Larson glows a fiery yellow through the power of acting alone.
