10 Psychological Thrillers That Genuinely Mess With Your Head

9. Gerald's Game

The Game 1997
Netflix

Starring Carla Gugino in one of her most standout performances, Gerald's Game is a Netflix adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel and was written and directed by Mike Flanagan.

The film revolves around a married couple, Gugino's Jessie Burlingame and Bruce Greenwood's Gerald Burlingame, who rent out a house in the middle of nowhere with the aim of recapturing some of the spark for their relationship. Attempting to play out a fetish of his, Gerald ends up handcuffing Jessie to their bed before suddenly dropping dead from a heart attack.

Still chained to the bed, Jessie is suddenly stuck in a potentially deadly battle for survival, as well as her inner demons.

Some truly shocking revelations are brought to light over the course of Jessie's ordeal, and the lengths she is forced to go through to stay sane, get a drink of water and then eventually escape is both what audiences love to imagine themselves in, as well as being the stuff their nightmares are made of.

There's also the inclusion of the mysterious 'man made of moonlight' that stalks Jessie one night, who remains one of the most mind-blowingly unnerving characters in film when his true identity is eventually revealed.
