10 Under The Radar Talents Who Made Cinema Awesome

6. Hermann Warm (Art Director)

Sometimes the people working behind the scenes on movies don't just change the ways movies are made, but sometime they have an influence on the art world at large. One such example is Hermann Warm, one of the prominent art directors of 1920's German Expressionism, a movement whose influence spread to other countries and to other art forms. Warm worked on one of the seminal silent films of all-time when he helped design the sets on The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a movie which played a huge role in creating the horror genre. Warm later went on to work with film legends such as Fritz Lang and most significantly Carl Theodore Dreyer, who he helped with the design of the iconic sets on The Passion of Joan of Arc. Through his work on some of the most important silent films, and through his involvement with one of the era's most significant art styles, Warm is an example of how the work of an obscure Art director, working in German cinema, can have such an outsized impact on the world of film and beyond.

I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
