9. Rescuers Porn
In 1999 Disney was forced into furiously recalling roughly 3.4 million copies of the Rescuers VHS, after the discovery of a controversial image hidden in the background of a scene. The shot, included above, featured a topless lady, clearly chopped out of something a lot more adult, at her window as the Rescuers zipped past on Orville's back. Though not visible to the naked eye it only appeared in two frames and VHS technology wouldn't allow it to be seen the blurry image was clearly enough to make the company think twice about letting it out.
The Explanation Disney didn't know the minute image made it into the final film, and if it weren't for the advances in single frame-advancement, the topless lady might well have remained a secret in plain sight. But it wasn't a Disney animator who spliced the image in according to Disney. Shortly after the recall The Independent included a report on the offending image:
A Disney spokeswoman said that the images in The Rescuers were placed in the film during production, but she declined to say what they were or who placed them... The company said the aim of the recall was to keep its promise to families that they can trust and rely on the Disney brand to provide the best in family entertainment.
The VHS was then reissued later the same year with the offending image removed. Some rumours have it that Disney in fact did know about the two offending frames, that they were put there by a layout artist and a scene planner and that everyone at Disney knew about it, but weren't concerned as no-one would ever notice. They then apparently forgot about the frames and released the VHS, until they realised their own error and recalled the first lot, confirming the presence of the objectionable images before anyone else ever got a sniff of their existence. Careless.
