Casting was absolutely crucial in the Harry Potter franchise, given that the three lead actors were eventually going to anchor the series for eight movies released over the course of an entire decade.

Emma Watson was of course cast as Hermione Granger, despite having little interest in auditioning for the part and only being nudged into it by her teacher, while ultimately being the final girl to audition.

Though Watson aced the audition and made it to the final shortlist of candidates, she actually clinched the role during a phone call with Potter author J.K. Rowling, where she demonstrated exactly the studious, nervous personality of Hermione herself. Rowling said:

"I fell absolutely in love with her...She spoke for, like, 60 seconds at least without drawing breath and I just said, 'Emma, you're perfect.'"

Rowling did add that Watson was a far more beautiful girl than she ever had in mind for Hermione, who was written as an "ugly duckling," but she was so enamoured with Watson that she decided to let that aspect of the character go for the movies.
