The set design also shows why 1917 should win the Oscar, as it demonstrates the quality and effort that went into making this picture.

To make this film look the way it does they created from scratch a wide variety of sets, the details of which are so intricate that you are really made to feel as if you’ve just been dropper onto the frontlines of World War One.

In the making of this production, they dug out over a mile of trenches, every inch of which was authentically dressed. The level of detail extends to other sets, such as the gun emplacement; a wide-open expanse, complete with dozens of destroyed artillery guns and spent shell casings. The scale of the sets gives a real tangible feeling to the world, heightening the tension as the threats the characters face seem even more real.

Also, despite the dirt and grime, the sets offer a bleak sense of beauty, and it’s hard not to appreciate. This is particularly noticeable on the previously mentioned French Village set. The crumbling, derelict buildings create a stunning and dramatic back drop to one of the film’s most exhilarating sequences.
