10 Reasons Black Panther Shouldn't Win Best Picture
8. The First Act Is Rough In Places
The film has so much going for it and does such a great job of engrossing the viewer in its adventure that it's easy to forget the first act is a little awkward in places.
In addition to having to establish both Wakanda and T'Challa's cast of friends and family, the opening Nigeria-set action sequence is frustratingly dark and the movie's best element, Michael B. Jordan's fantastic Erik Killmonger, is largely kept off-screen for the first reel.
It is a movie that truly finds its groove by act two, and though the set-up is never less than solidly enjoyable, it also feels like the most crucial elements for a Best Picture winner - characters and plot - are a little undeserved by more typical blockbuster concerns.
