10 Reasons Black Panther Shouldn't Win Best Picture

3. The Third Act Is Pretty Messy

Though Black Panther is a mostly smart, sharply executed blockbuster, it certainly gives in to its lesser instincts in the third act, not only in terms of the frequently dodgy CGI, but the sheer schlockiness of the final battle itself.

Counter to the film's better, more effective and quieter moments - especially Killmonger meeting his father on the Ancestral Plane - Black Panther's finale is loud and over-the-top, and most certainly where director Ryan Coogler's inexperience with big-budget cinema shines through the most.

Granted, the final moments of T'Challa and Killmonger's confrontation are masterfully executed, but it's a shame that much of what led up to it was so typical of third-act Marvel monotony: countless, mostly anonymous bodies punching and shooting each other accompanied by an excess of hokey digital elements.
