1. To Show Hollywood We Want Originality (And Not Just Sequels)
Above all, this is the reason its so important you go and see Edge of Tomorrow this summer, and ideally this weekend if youre free - the sooner, the better: franchise overload is so common a complaint, and this is the treatment. Its an inventive blockbuster with a different dynamic, one that has a plot, a strong female lead, and is based on a book originally in Japanese. The multiplex needs more films like this, and the only way that's going to happen is by showing up. When a film of this scope fails, studios want answers, and even more than that, they want to make sure it doesnt happen again. Since their losses on The Lone Ranger, for example, Brad Birds Tomorrowland and Jon Favreaus The Jungle Book are the only big-budget, non-sequel, live-action movies Disney has on the calendar for the next four years. When original projects fail, studios run scared, and when they do that, they flock to tried-and-tested properties. Franchises are their safety nets, because they know theyre usually guaranteed a profit with minimum effort and maximum budget. Its up to studios to produce original blockbusters worth watching, no question. But its up to us to see them when they come, and its this that makes Edge of Tomorrow the most important blockbuster of the year. Warner Bros. has invested time and money to create something visually spectacular, emotionally engaging, and fuelled by adrenaline. If audiences dont turn out to see it, theyre only going to focus on building their DC Cinematic Universe. And yes, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is going to be incredible, but it shouldn't come at the cost of standalone tentpoles like this entering the arena alongside it. Movie / TV enthusiast with a DVD and Blu-ray collection bigger than I'd care to admit. If anyone is offering creative / furniture solutions to house them, I'm all ears.
