1. Tangled Succeeded In Spite Of Horrible Marketing
As mentioned in the intro, Frozen has surpassed a worldwide haul of a BILLION dollars. It is obviously the more financially successful movie. Tangled was no slouch though, earning nearly $600,000,000 worldwide. And Tangled made that profit off one of the worst marketing campaigns in Disney history. Rather than triumphantly sounding the return of the classic Disney Princess film, they marketed Tangled with a distinctly 'Dreamworksy' feel. Rather than focus on the heart of the story, or the romance, or play up the amazing soundtrack, someone in marketing thought it was a better idea to feature an extra smarmy representation of Flynn, fast cut action, and the one horrible pop song on the soundtrack (which only plays over the end credits in the actual movie). They also had a weird hair product tie-in commercial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1RT_i8R6MM Watching those trailers would make anyone suspicious of Tangled, because it's marketing fundamentall makes it look cheap and forgettable. In fact, it opened at #2, and only reached the number 1 spot on the charts in its second week (likely off positive word of mouth) but after getting some momentum going, Tangled went on to make twice what Disney's previous animated feature, The Princess And The Frog, made, both globally and domestically. Frozen, by comparison, was marketed with the phrase "Disney Animation's Best Since the Lion King." It's no wonder that moviegoers were more willing to give it a shot. It was marketed as much to mothers as it was their children, with the result of a massive box office haul. In summary, with the second Frozen release incoming, you should definitely go ahead and buy it: despite its flaws, it's an enjoyable movie. But you should also check out Tangled if you haven't seen it. It's simply a better film.
