10 Reasons Mission: Impossible - Fallout Is The Best Ever
4. The Best Running Ever
Cruise is famous for his running. The Mission: Impossible franchise has never been an exception of this, in fact more often than not, it's been the rule.
Nearly every film has a key moment in which Ethan Hunt has to run somewhere on foot, giving viewers an eyeful of Cruise's majestic running. Somewhere around Mission: Impossible III, the filmmakers behind the franchise began to realize what a mythic and kinetic power Cruise's running had and began using it in increasingly creative ways.
In Mission: Impossible III, Abrams captured it in a long-oner of Cruise spriting through Shanghai. In Ghost Protocol, Bird filmed him running from a sandstorm in beautiful head-on IMAX. In Rogue Nation, McQuarrie had him running in his introductory shot. Here, in Fallout, McQuarrie crafts a sequence that features the absolute best running Tom Cruise has ever done.
Hunt has to run across London, chasing after Walker. This results in his leaping across rooftops, shattering windows to jump out of, and even the infamous shot of Cruise breaking his ankle. The sequence itself is incredibly well-structured and tense.
But McQuarrie framing Crusie's running against the backdrop of the London skyline is pure cinema at its finest. It's the running sequence that means the most to the plot, emotionally, and McQuarrie's eye for size and scale ties it for the most visually impactful run yet, right alongside Ghost Protocol.
