10 Reasons That Prove Sylvester Stallone Is Underrated
5. The Expendables Films And Casts
This series of films, perhaps more than any other, show that Stallone simply wants to have a bit more fun now. Gone is the grimacing, tooth-pick chewing anti-hero of Cobra and in comes Barney Ross and his large gang of mates. Granted, similar to Grudge Match, these films would have been a far bigger deal in the eighties, or even the nineties. What we would have got then though would have been egos bashing against each other and no humour, but what we have in the noughties is a group of actors, most past their prime, coming together and simply wanting to entertain the masses. Looking at the films, the plots are never going to set the world on fire. Yes, Stallone does deserve praise for writing and directing crowd-pleasers, but all you have to do is look at Jean-Claude Van Damme's weak villain in the first sequel to see there are some missed opportunities. It is, however, an action franchise in a super-hero age of spandex and CGI, which isn't afraid to give those that grew up in the 80's and 90's a chance to grin as Chuck Norris walks in slow motion or Stallone and Stone Cold brawl in the midst of a fire fight. These films are the ultimate Friday night DVD takeaway experience. Perhaps they're completely forgettable but when they're on, they tick all the boxes we need as we see action legends trade blows.
