10 Reasons That Prove Sylvester Stallone Is Underrated
3. In The PG-Age, He's Not Afraid To Make Adult Films
This is an interesting one because I don't just mean the eighties retro Expendables series or the OOT violence of Rambo, but rather an adult film like Rocky Balboa. Here's a movie that isn't afraid to discuss what it means to grow old. What it's like to be a spare part in society. How it feels to be a forgotten part of the history of a sport you were a champion in. Yes, it ticks all the Rocky boxes with training montages, inspirational speeches and a grandiose fight at the end, but it also shows a man who has been beaten down by life and fights to prove he can still be worth something. It's a theme Stallone appears to be wanting to investigate more with Grudge Match and even, to a point, Escape Plan. Again, we live in an age where to make films for the 'grey dollar' you have to cast Judi Dench and Penelope Wilton but, with complete respect to them, Stallone wants to make a very different sort of film for people who are ageing and, if nothing else, Stallone himself knows 'how hard life hits'.
