10 Reasons Star Wars Visions Is The Future Of The Franchise
2. It's Not Beholden to Canon
When Star Wars Visions producer James Waugh approached the anime studios he selected to bring the series to life, he explained to them that they didn't have to follow the current Star Wars timeline and could depict what ever era of the Star Wars universe's history they wanted.
This gambit proved tremendously liberating. Visions depicts stories from Star Wars eras never shown onscreen before, which frees the narratives to follow their own paths without having to worry about contradicting established canon.
One of the gripes detractors had with the sequel trilogy was its reliance on the Skywalker family to propel the plot. By setting its stories in different eras of Star Wars' history, Visions is able to go beyond the now-familiar era of the saga films, presenting wholly new characters and scenarios free from the baggage of fan expectations.
If Star Wars uses this freedom as a model going forward, then any future cinematic instalments can present new characters in unique settings, retaining the Star Wars magic but giving audiences something they've never seen before.
