10 Reasons The Flash Failed
3. Ezra Miller's Controversies
Back in 2020, on the heels of appearing in multiple DC projects, Ezra Miller seemed poised to become a massive star. Unfortunately, things soon went awry when Miller found themselves at the centre of numerous legal troubles.
A video showing the star choke a female fan blew up on social media, leading to many fans calling for Miller to be removed from any upcoming DC projects.
However, WB decided to stick with the troubled actor amid the controversy. The incident appeared to largely blow over. In 2021, Miller won the Oscar's Favorite Cheer Moment poll (thanks in part a social media campaign led by the Snyderverse fandom) and all seemed well enough.
But the notorious choking incident wasn't Miller's only brush with controversy. In 2022, Miller became the centre of numerous viral clashes with the law, including alleged assaults. Ultimately, Miller issued an apology for their behaviour, pled guilty an unlawful trespassing charge and entered treatment for mental health issues.
This about-face from the contrite star failed to sway moviegoers, which likely contributed to the audience for The Flash skewing heavily male in its opening weekend, seeing men comprise 73% of tickets sales, much higher than average.
