As has been made abundantly clear over the last few years in particular, Ridley Scott's career is a wild rollercoaster ride of enormous highs, mediocre middling efforts and a couple of down-right terrible lows. The Martian is an unquestionable high-point for Scott's career and certainly a movie worthy of consideration for Best Picture, Best Director and countless technical Oscars. If you're in the camp that Gladiator is an entertaining film but not at all worthy of Best Picture, then it's easy to see how this could be considered his best film since Blade Runner all the way back in 1982. Its dramatic heft and overall ground-breaking ingenuity isn't up to the standards of that film or Scott's seminal Alien, but there's not a single other work in his filmography that takes The Martian to school. It's such a thrill to see Scott back on top, proving that age is only a number, and with the right script, legendary filmmakers are still capable of demonstrating the creative verve from their (comparative) youths. Have you seen The Martian yet? What did you think? Shout it out in the comments!
