10 Reasons The Martian Is Ridley Scott's Comeback

4. ...And The Supporting Cast Is Fantastic Too

Damon may not get much time to interact with them, but the supporting cast is also superb here. Of particular mention are Jeff Daniels, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Sean Bean (who finally gets a great, post-Lord of the Rings role that isn't Game of Thrones), but even the smaller parts, played by Kristen Wiig, Michael Pena, Kate Mara and Donald Glover, form part of a terrific ensemble that's without question among the year's best. There's not a single off-note performance in the film, and each actor brings something different to it, helping to liven up those scenes set back on Earth and link the two distant locales together. The supporting roles may be too small to earn any sensible awards consideration, but as an ensemble, they are a magnificent bunch, and easily the most canny cast Scott has been lucky enough to work with in a long while.
