10 Reasons The Oscars Don't Matter

4. It's Too Political

One need only look as far as 2009's Oscar ceremony to see how much politics plays into the eventual winner of many of the awards. Mickey Rourke gave the performance of his life as Randy 'The Ram' Robinson in Darren Aronofsky's dramatic masterpiece The Wrestler, and given how many awards he won on the precursor circuit, he was widely expected to win the Oscar. However, the award went to Sean Penn for his strong work in Milk, and that's for two reasons only - a) Mickey Rourke has burned a lot of bridges in Hollywood over the years, and a lot of those people are likely Oscar voters, and b) the Proposition 8 debate was fierce at the time of the Oscars, and voting for Penn's performance as assassinated gay politician Harvey Milk was seen as a way of protesting the passing of that bill, which denied the ability for homosexuals to get married in California. In order to make a political statement, the best performance of the year missed out on an award. It's a bit silly, really.
