Here's the thing that makes Toy Story 4 all the more depressing; the opinion that it's a big mistake is far from unique. In the aftermath of the announcement it became abundantly clear the general feeling is that the film is a bad idea. Sure, some people are excited, but the consensus is that this is another step-back for the animation studio that was once cutting edge. Compare this to how Toy Story 3 was treated. From conception everyone was excited, with it becoming one of the biggest films of 2010 surprising no one. A part of this lack of excitement this time around is that Pixar haven't quite reached the masterpiece level we knew them for since the end of the naughties, so audiences are lot less confident they can pull the return off. But it stretches more industry wide than just that; with Hollywood consistently bringing back franchises and ideas when they are well past their sell-by date (see The Lone Ranger, eighties slashers and, if you want, Superman) it just feels like more cynical film-making. The big issue with all this is that without the fan-base to enjoy it, the film's existence is rather pointless. Pixar are making a movie no one really wants to see. Which a sentence we never thought would have to be written. What are your thoughts on Toy Story 4? Will it be a masterpiece to match the other three or a massive disappointment?
