10 Reasons Why Chris Nolan Should Stay Away From James Bond

3. The Nolan Players

dark_knight_michael_caine_christian_bale_011 This gets to a broader concern: while he€™s not the first person to employ a small repertory company of cast and crew repeatedly, Christopher Nolan certainly doesn€™t let a lot of other kids play in his toybox. Behind the scenes, this has led to the aforementioned Jonathan Nolan, and his wife Emma Thomas as producer. In the movies themselves, this creates predictable closed circuits of casting: Michael Caine€™s twinkling mentor, Joseph Gordon-Levitt€™s cynical-beyond-his-years sidekick, Marion Cotillard€™s femme fatale, and € er, well, Tom Hardy€™s a bit of a wild card (but, for obvious reasons, not a Joker). The fact that these archetypes recur so frequently may point to a wider schematic approach to characterization throughout Nolan€™s films (should we be generous and call it Dickensian? Vote now!). All I know is I€™d rather see Gary Oldman as a Bond villain than Ellen Page (still looking all of twelve years old) as a Bond girl.

Hamish Crawford writes fiction more easily than fact. His first volume of short fiction, “A Madhouse, Only With More Elegant Jackets”, was published in 2011 from First Edition Publishing. He has an English degree from the University of Calgary and a Screenwriting M.A. from the University of Westminster, which leaves little space on the wall for his several PhD. rejection letters. His stories and articles have appeared in such publications as NoD and the Cult Britannia website (www.cultbritannia.co.uk). In September he will be speaking at a Doctor Who 50th anniversary conference in Hertfordsire. The owner of far more hats than heads, Hamish currently lives in Canada, and is disappointed that the preceding biography contains so few factual errors.
