10 Reasons Why DC Should Give Up On Its Cinematic Universe
10. There's No Discernable Strategy
Just what exactly have Warner Bros. been up to recently?
Between reports of Ben Affleck exiting Matt Reeves' Batman film, Joker getting a standalone feature without Jared Leto and, newest of all, a Leto-led Joker & Harley project getting the green light, things have gotten pretty chaotic. We don't even know if Batman will be a part of the DCEU, for starters, and if he isn't - and this Joker origin story does move ahead - then again, they're probably better for it. Certainly so, if they're attempting to move away from the protracted four yearlong dirge that Wonder Woman only recently managed to slay.
The events of the past week just seem to exemplify WB's shotgun approach to moviemaking, with the move to create a Justice League film right off the bat too displaying a certain kind of ignorance for what made Marvel's shared universe so compelling in the first place. No one cares about these characters (except for Wonder Woman), because they haven't spent the time requisite to fully invest in them. And, while it is financially viable, it engenders the whole creative process with a kind of cynicism that screams "hey! We're only doing this because Marvel did!"
There has to be purpose to these films. Otherwise, they'll be left in their rival's shadow for years to come.
