10 Reasons Why Indiana Jones 4 Isn’t All That Bad

5. The Ending (sort of) This one needs a caveat. I fully accept that the big special effects ending, with the crystal aliens all merging, Cate Blanchett being turned to dust and a flying saucer destroying an entire valley, is rubbish. It does look for all the world like Lucas snuck behind the camera while Spielberg was on his coffee break, and it all feels pretty anticlimactic. Fortunately, Spielberg redeems things at least partially by the real ending, which features (SPOILER ALERT) Indy and Marion getting married. Assuming of course that there won€™t be an Indy 5, this is a very good way to finish off a story arc that began in the first film. I€™ll touch on Karen Allen€™s performance shortly, but if we had to put these two characters back together, then this is the right way to end it, rather than the Bond-style ending of the first two films or killing her off as in Last Crusade. It€™s an example of Spielberg€™s sentimentality working well with the subject matter, and at the very least helps to remedy whatever Lucas dares to throw at us.
