Sometimes, you don't need a blindingly brilliant piece of stunt work to impress. Sometimes, you just need to know how to choreograph a fight so that the audience can feel their teeth rattle with every hit - and M:I has never been short on some seriously impressive dust-ups.

We'd be remiss to not mention Fallout's bathroom brawl, which remains one of the most satisfying scraps in recent cinematic memory, the sort of fight that comes with a wonderful sense of spatial geography that plunges the viewer headfirst into the sights of August Walker's reloading fists.

There's plenty of others in the sixth entry, including the bruising three-way matchup between Ilsa, Benji and Lane that comes near the close of the film, but other great sequences crafted with a fine eye for the action include Hunt's hi-tech garage showdown with Hendricks in Ghost Protocol and the beach battle between Ethan and Sean Ambrose that caps M:I 2.

The simple trick? They're all tangible encounters, rarely enhanced by extra effects. As gloriously euphoric as the face-offs in superhero fare can be, they're all augumented by visual whiz-bang - and that's something that can rarely match up to the satisfying muscularity of these encounters.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
