10 Reasons Why Tobey Maguire Is STILL The Best On-Screen Spider-Man
8. NEW. YORK. WEB-SWINGING.
Web-swinging through New York is a simple feature of Raimi’s Trilogy, but nevertheless an essential one when portraying the legend of Spider-Man in the medium of film.
Nothing captures his image more than swinging from skyscraper to skyscraper in the dense concrete jungle, as encapsulated by the world’s love for the Amazing Fantasy comic-book cover from 1962.
Picture the scene. Spider-Man dives from the peak of a gigantic building. The Raimi Trilogy musical score rings out as he plummets to the ground. At the last second, he shoots a web, it sticks to the wall of a high-sitting wall, and he swings away, gliding past a million windows as he does.
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man captures this beautiful trope perfectly.
Granted, Garfield does a good job of giving us epic web swings, but we need to see more of it. It seems to take a back seat (especially in the first film) and we deserve more!
As for Holland, the comparison just isn’t worth it. With better effects, you would think the wide shots of gliding through New York would be off the charts, but Disney never really bother. Travelling around New York is quick, snappy, and it's always about the destination, not the journey. And we all love the journey!
