10 Reasons Why Val Kilmer Is The Most Underrated Batman

1. He Actually Delivered A Strong Layered Performance

While Batman Forever's script certainly had its issues, the strength of Kilmer's turn as the Dark Knight shouldn't be overlooked.

It's not easy to make a man who dresses like a giant bat seem grounded, and yet he pulled it off. However, he did far more than just succeed at one of the fundamental principles of portraying Batman - he also delivered an incredibly convincing performance, delving into Bruce Wayne's psyche in order to show us all just how troubled a character he was. That, of course, could also explain how he managed to play both Bruce and Batman so well, as his turn was one of the first times we had really seen the duality of the character explored - something that Kilmer excelled at.

His understated offering ensured that Bruce remained grounded amid all the madness, while allowing audiences to see a more emotional side to the character. That being said, he could also ham things up and turn on the charisma when Bruce went into playboy billionaire mode, while stripping it all back when he let the Bat out of the cave.

Charming, broody, emotionally conflicted; you name it and Kilmer could deliver it. He gave his all to the role, playing to the strengths of whichever Bruce he was in each respective scene and, quite frankly, he deserves a lot more appreciation for finally giving the character the starring role that he needed in a Batman film.
