10 Recent Box Office Duds Destined To Become Cult Classics

9. Ingrid Goes West

Ingrid Goes West is a whip-smart, pitch-black comedy that skewers the social media generation, and in years to come will serve as a snapshot of a particular time for our culture. Aubrey Plaza stars as the unstable title character, who moves across the country in an effort to befriend an Instagram influencer she feels a connection with.

Five years ago, that plot description would have sounded like absolute nonsense. These days, it seems like an incredibly plausible story that you could find on the news, such is the way that certain demographics have let social media dominate their lives. Many movies that go on to become cult classics appeal to people who identify with either the narrative or the characters at that point in time, and Ingrid Goes West definitely falls under this category.

As technology continues to evolve at a frightening rate, Ingrid Goes West isn't going to stay topical for long, and the satire probably won't make any sense by the time the next generation of smartphones comes along. Ironically for a movie that skewers the social media generation in brilliant fashion, it seems as though people couldn't drag themselves away form their phones long enough to actually go an see it in the theater, where it made just $3.2m at the box office despite hugely positive reviews.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
