10 Recent Creature Feature Horror Movies You Need To Watch

Scary creatures are the order of the day in these ten features.

There was a time where "creature features" not only ruled the horror movie landscape, but the world of cinema as a whole. This type of film, which is categorised broadly as any horror where a monster is the main antagonist and focus, was extremely popular in the early days of cinema, with the likes of Godzilla, King Kong, The Wolfman, and many more pulling in millions of viewers.

Though they've never quite reached the heights of these glory days, creature features are still popular and draw good numbers when done correctly. Many have evolved with the times, incorporating elements of other genres to create more compelling narratives and visceral scares than you'd get at the drive-in.

All of these movies were released in this decade and have done a great job keeping the flame alive. The heroes are sympathetic, the stories are well-written, and the monsters are well-designed and brought to life by modern effects technology.

They've come a long way since a bloke in a rubber suit rampaging round a carpark.

If you're a fan of the classics, then why not check out what their grandkids are up to.

10. Slotherhouse

Let's kick this list off with one of the most original (and bonkers) premises for a horror movie of all time.

College girl Emily (Lisa Ambalavanar) is running to become head of her sorority. To set herself out from the other candidates, she adopts a pet three-toed sloth named Alpha in the hope that his cuteness will win her votes. Emily's plan works for a while, until it becomes apparent that Alpha is not the dozy tree-dweller he appears.

In 2023's Slotherhouse (an absolutely brilliant name for a film), Alpha is the main villain, as he picks off the girls one-by-one as they struggle to deal with this unexpected threat.

The concept came about when co-writer Bradley Fowler set himself the challenge of coming up with a really stupid idea for a horror, but the final product leans so heavily into its own absurdity that the end result is a genuinely funny film with plenty of bloody moments too.

Hopefully this is the start of a franchise so that, one day, there can be a movie called "Slotherhouse 5". That's a literature joke.
