5. Bad Hair
A slice of 1980s retro, director Justin Simien's Bad Hair brings us into the world of music television, accompanying Anna Bludso (Elle Lorraine) as she attempts to claw her way to the top, despite her nappy hair. Turns out all you need to make it in this hip world as a black woman in the ‘80s is an impressive weave, and after a tip takes her to an upmarket new salon, she looks the part and scores her promotion.
Thing is, the wig is actually the hair of some old, dead witches, whose generational trauma rings clear. Anna's weave takes on a mind of its own and possesses the poor girl, feeding on blood and seeking an independent life of its own. It should go without saying that there are plenty of laughs fixed between the moments of sheer terror, combining perfectly with the film’s wry take on outdated race relations.
Bad Hair suffered from the curse of streaming, as, following a positive reception at Sundance, it was picked up by Hulu, afforded a very limited release in the cinema, and then went to digital streaming a week later. Despite this, it goes pretty hard on all fronts, waiting to be discovered.
