Daniel Isnt Real Hell
Samuel Goldwyn Pictures

A film that would make both of the Cronenbergs proud, hellish psychological body horror Daniel Isn't Real courts controversy from its pants-on-fire title onwards, opening with a child witnessing a mass shooting in a coffee shop, and really going to hell and back.

Protagonist Luke Nightingale (Miles Robbins) was the aforementioned child, who now suffers from poor mental health and seeks the return of his invisible friend Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger), who encourages him to do ever-more dangerous and violent things. As it turns out, Daniel is a very real parasitic demon who is on a mission to make Luke's body his own. And he very nearly does.

Luke is hypnotised by his therapist, allowing Daniel the leeway to take over his body and trap him in the Castle -- an otherworldly dimension that manifests as a hellish version of the dollhouse Luke trapped Daniel in when he was a child. But, although he teeters on the precipice of damnation, it is not actually Luke who suffers the worst fate of all.

Luke eventually breaks free, but while stuck inside Daniel's dark place, which is somewhere between hell and the abyss, he encounters a wretched beast with a thorny, melted face. That hell-beast is in fact John Thigpen (Daniel Marconi), the coffee shop killer from the beginning of the movie. He has been deformed by Daniel into something unspeakable and cursed to haunt this hell-scape forever...
