6. Screw(driver) You - Swallow
A psychological thriller that flew under the radar, this 2019 film featured a tightly knit plot, fascinating characters and some gut-churning moments of body horror. At various points throughout the film, the latter applied quite literally.
Hunter is a newly pregnant housewife, and her husband is the upcoming CEO of his father’s business empire. Being working-class herself, Hunter has been thrust into a very stressful and alien environment, which is worsened by her uncaring husband and his distant parents.
As a coping mechanism, Hunter develops pica – a disorder that makes one want to eat inedible objects. These range from a marble to a thumb-tack, and when Hunter is having a severe panic attack, perhaps the most disturbing object of all.
A screwdriver.
The scene is painfully realistic, and watching Hunter choke on this item is just as horrible to watch. It doesn’t hold back from the horrors of the disorder, which many have never even heard of.
The entire movie is uncomfortable, and tense in many ways. Obviously, if you are sensitive to eating disorders, maybe give this one a miss.
