5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

Following the success of the first two Conjuring films, the hope was that the third mainline entry in the series would reach the same terrifying heights as its predecessors. However, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It fell short of the mark despite bringing a refreshing change of pace to the franchise.

Based on the real-life case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claimed he murdered somebody while under demonic possession, the film follows demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they become embroiled in the ensuing investigation.

Like the previous films, much of what works about this entry is the Warrens’ relationship. Wilson and Farmiga shine in their roles and give audiences a reason to become invested in their plight. Unlike the other Conjuring movies, this one is played out more like a paranormal detective story than a supernatural haunting, with there being plenty of unexpected twists to keep things interesting.

There’s a lot going on in the script, and unfortunately The Devil Made Me Do It couldn't strike a balance between being a love story, thriller, and supernatural haunting. Each element is fighting for the spotlight with none reaching their potential.

The result is a film that never manages to find its footing.
