10 Recent Horror Movies That Had No Right To Be This Good

8. Heart Eyes

Immaculate 2024
Screen Gems

Slasher film Heart Eyes wasn't just released around Valentine's Day as a feat of box office counter-programming - it was also a bold attempt by director Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within) to bolt a rom-com onto a more typical horror movie.

It sounds like a tall order on paper because it is, because these chalk-and-cheese film genres have almost never been paired together before - and for good reason.

But credit where it's due, Ruben manages to deliver a film that's both genuinely romantic - per the strong chemistry between leads Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding - and a fun, gory slasher romp in the vein of the Scream movies.

Though this combo could've been totally offputting, it actually helps Heart Eyes stand out in an undeniably crowded horror subgenre.

It's really only an overly predictable killer reveal that stops this one from being a genuine horror classic, but if you can forgive that, this is a film that works in spite of so many warning signs that it really, really shouldn't.
