10 Recent Movie Castings That Had No Right To Be This Good
8. Robert Downey Jr. As Lewis Strauss - Oppenheimer
The intention of this list certainly isn't to suggest that any of the actors featured are in any way bad. The majority have simply been thrown into roles that, on the surface, didn't seem to suit their strengths or their past.
Robert Downey Jr., for example, is an exceptional actor and was one of the biggest reasons for the success of the MCU, particularly in the early days. It is no hyperbole to say that without Robert Downey Jr., the biggest movie franchise in history would have fallen flat.
He was sensational as Tony Stark, but RDJ's next role after Avengers: Endgame? Dolittle. Hardly a promising start to his post-comic-book career, and yet four years later, he was receiving an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor after playing Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer.
Of course, if Nolan casts an actor, then there is clearly a reason, but could anyone have predicted that Downey would have made such a huge step so soon? As Strauss, the actor was immense, a standout in a film full of standouts, something that many perhaps wouldn't have expected from the face of the MCU. No disrespect meant to either RDJ or the MCU.
