Beyond all the fussing over who, exactly, is Agent Argylle in Matthew Vaughn's new spy romp Argylle, there was a deeply bizarre rumour that the novel from which the screenplay was apparently adapted was penned by Taylor Swift.

It all started when the as-yet-unreleased Argylle novel was said to be written by Elly Conway - a person with no online presence, prompting many to assume that it was a pseudonym for the real author, who is played in the film by Bryce Dallas Howard.

And because Taylor Swift fans found some circumstantial links between the singer and Conway - such as them both owning a Scottish Fold cat - the rumour snowballed that Tay-Tay was indeed the author of the Argylle novel.

Which, predictably, turned out to be total nonsense. And honestly, a cynical person might assume the story was cooked up by Apple's marketing department in a desperate attempt to capitalise on the pop mega-star's enormous popularity.

Given that Argylle was a big ol' flop, though, it didn't exactly pan out.
