10 Recent Movie Trailers That Totally Lied To You

3. Nightbitch

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
20th Century Studios

Few recent horror films have been failed more by their marketing than Nightbitch, which was aggressively sold as a black comedy body horror film somewhat in the vein of The Substance.

But in reality, Nightbitch is far more of a dramedy about the toils of motherhood, with the whole "underappreciated mother transforms into a dog at night" premise ultimately being a metaphor rather than something literal as implied by the trailers.

The transformation conceit is far more of a peripheral aspect of the story than horror fans had been led to expect, ensuring plenty of disappointment when it leaned far more heavily on the dramatic elements of its premise.

While mixed reviews didn't help the film's indifferent reception from audiences, the fact that the marketing sold it as something quite different surely kneecapped its box office potential, with the figures being so dire that distributor Searchlight didn't even officially report them.
