10 Recent Movie Trailers That Totally Lied To You

4. Nosferatu

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Universal

The trailers for Robert Eggers' mesmerising new take on Nosferatu refreshingly concealed the appearance of vampire Count Orlok (Bill SkarsgÄrd) for the most part, cloaking him in shadow and ensuring audiences wouldn't see him in his full glory until they bought a cinema ticket.

But once the film was released, it was clear that Universal had a bit of an ulterior motive here - they wanted to avoid a bunch of headache-inducing social media discourse about a certain bold design decision.

Eggers opted to give Orlok a large, bushy mustache, which while absolutely historically accurate to Transylvanian noblemen of the period, left some viewers struggling to take the villain seriously.

And so, had the trailers revealed the 'tache ahead of time, it likely would've tainted the perception of the film pre-release and potentially even put a dent in its box office, because there's no way that lip-caterpillar wouldn't have gone viral.

This is really more of a lie-by-omission than an attempt to overtly deceive audiences, and given the tendency for social media to blow just about everything out of proportion, it's tough to blame the marketing team for keeping this polarising facet of Orlok's character on the down-low.
