Though Tim Burton's stubborn commitment to making a Beetlejuice sequel is commendable, the fact that it took 36 years to finally get made was perhaps a testament to the fact that the original 1988 oddball comedy should stay a one-off.

And even with original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara returning for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it was just tough to have faith in the vision of a modern Tim Burton, given the rather lacklustre quality of his recent career output.

While it would've surprised few if this sequel was a CGI-soaked payday for Burton and nothing more, that thankfully turned out not to be the case.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a rare decades-later sequel that feels wholly worthy of what came before, largely due to the film's emphasis on eye-popping practical effects and its game ensemble cast, resulting in Burton's most vibrant piece of work in many years.

Though the film's critical and commercial success led some to consider the prospect of a third film, Burton rather smartly shut that talk down, pointing to the enormous amount of time it took to get just one sequel made. Indeed, quit while you're ahead, Tim.
