Given that surrealist filmmaker Guy Maddin's (The Forbidden Room) new film Rumours boasted an enviable supporting cast including Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, Denis Ménochet, and Alicia Vikander, it was reasonable to assume that Maddin would tone his signature weirdness down a tad.

But oh no, he didn't do that at all.

This beguiling comedy-horror follows various world leaders who, while meeting at the G7 summit, get lost in the woods and encounter myriad strange phenomena, including zombies and a giant brain - as you do.

Reactions to this one have been all over the map ever since its Cannes Film Festival premiere last May, and anything else would've frankly been a shock. A litmus test for the audience's appetite for nonsense logic and dry humour, this is a textbook not-for-everyone outing that leaves one questioning how Maddin ever convinced his cast to star in it - let alone persuade a studio to fund it.
