10 Recent Movies Nobody Saw Coming
1. Sick
Just when it seemed like the world had gotten "COVID movies" out of its system - and thank God - along came a late bloomer pandemic slasher flick with something on its mind.
This past January, John Hyams' new horror film Sick was released, centered around two friends quarantining at a lake house when they're attacked by a masked assailant.
With Scream's Kevin Williamson penning the script, it's little surprise that Sick has a sharp satirical bent about folks on all sides of the pandemic equation, and though it was easy to roll one's eyes at COVID movies in 2023, Hyams' film ultimately justified its existence.
Between its strong central performances from Gideon Adlon and Beth Million, taut suspense sequences, and ripe, timely satire, Sick proved that with sufficiently smart execution, a seemingly dated, tired concept can still be savagely effective.
But seriously, as we enter the second half of 2023, can we give the pandemic movies a rest, yeah?
