10 Recent Movies Ruined By Their Marketing

4. Madame Web

Now to be completely fair, the fact that Madame Web is a terrible movie is probably what ruined it, but the marketing campaign sure didn't help.

Even if you ignore how hilariously little effort Dakota Johnson put into pretending she was interested in promoting the film, Madame Web rendered itself a widely-memed laughing stock from the moment its first trailer dropped.

Many relentlessly dragged the trailer for including the woefully wooden, clunky line, "He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died," which became viral enough that the filmmakers ultimately ended up cutting it from the final film.

But the damage had already been done - the line alone cemented the online perception that Madame Web was going to be pure dreck, and so likely persuaded many to swear off seeing it altogether.

After all, why spend money on a movie ticket when it's way more entertaining to just make fun of it online?

Madame Web certainly wasn't vindicated by either its quality or its box office, but Sony has only themselves to blame when they let the marketing blatantly expose how thoroughly awful it truly was.
