Crimes of the Future was the legendary David Cronenberg's first film in eight years, after 2014's so-so Maps to the Stars, and so expectations were high that the filmmaker's long-gestating new body horror movie would be a major return to shocking form.

Cronenberg certainly helped stir the pot by claiming that he expected walkouts within the first five minutes of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and post-screenings reports noted that there were indeed walkouts throughout the premiere.

Yet reviews from Cannes largely warned viewers to temper their expectations, that Crimes of the Future wasn't some gonzo shock-fest and ultimately one of Cronenberg's tamer forays into body horror.

More to the point, it's far more of an homage to the director's own career than anything, borrowing liberally from the stories and ideas that define many of his finest works.

It's still an entertaining film packed with some fascinatingly off-kilter performances - especially a wild Kristen Stewart - but anyone pining for the most gory, original, insane thing Cronenberg has ever made was surely left nonplussed.
