10 Recent Movies Ruined By Unrealistic Expectations
2. Nope
Jordan Peele's third film Nope naturally arrived atop colossal expectations, that it'd be another challenging, left-field horror film with a devastatingly clever social allegory to boot.
After the success of Get Out and Us, it's clear that audiences are thirsty to see more of the same from Peele, but with Nope the filmmaker opted to give them something else entirely.
Though considerably more technically robust than either of his prior films, Nope was actually Peele's most straight-forward work in a lot of ways. While certainly not an empty film thematically, it wasn't emphatically about pressing social issues in the same way that Get Out or Us were.
It was more of an homage to a classic sci-fi films - namely Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind - albeit with its own contemporary spin.
Sure, Nope certainly had much to say about how we process and commodify trauma in the age of TMZ, but anyone expecting a savage satirical critique of society re: race or class was sure to be left rather underwhelmed.
As a result of people unreasonably expecting Peele to follow the same template yet again, they didn't know what to do with the very different - yet still highly accomplished - piece of work he gave them.
