10 Recent Movies So Good You Overlook Huge Flaws

Deadpool & Wolverine's story is kinda dumb... but who cares?

In the century-plus-long history of cinema, many things have changed, but one thing has remained absolutely constant: the vast majority of movies aren't classics or turkeys, they're somewhere in the middle.

When viewers seek out older movies, they'll generally go for the most critically acclaimed offerings, and when films at large are discussed, the films brought up will often be either the really great ones or the really bad ones. Therefore, it's easy to forget that a majority of movies out there are fairly mid-tier offerings, and in any given year, one probably isn't going to encounter very many films that are an 8/10 or above.

That's one of the reasons why genuinely great pictures stand out so much, and why they are so satisfying to watch. Of course, every movie has flaws, even undisputed classics like Citizen Kane or The Godfather, and as such, whatever great movies audiences encounter during a year will inevitably have their issues. In the case of the following ten features, they all have some pretty massive flaws, and yet, this was easy to forgive.

When a movie is this good, mundanities such as plot holes, iffy subplots, and underwhelming twists simply fade into the background.

10. Carry-On - It's Filled With Plot Holes

Carry-On is one of the most entertaining action films in recent memory. It's a delightfully unpredictable and endlessly suspenseful thrill ride that flies high thanks to its many shocking plot twists and two superb lead performances from Taron Egerton, who plays the picture's protagonist, and Jason Bateman, who plays brilliantly against type as a sadistic terrorist.

So yeah, it's an absolute blast... so long as you suspend your disbelief, that is.

The movie is full of plot holes, and there's no getting away from it. The Traveler (Bateman's unnamed terrorist) walks around the airport and acts suspiciously, yet no-one ever apprehends him. On numerous occasions, guns are fired without silencers, and apparently, nobody hears this since nobody locks the airport down.

In the film's second half, the Traveler arms the bomb he's planning to use and forces protagonist Ethan to disarm it in order to force him to comply... thus showing him how to disarm the bomb, which of course Ethan does later. Ethan also jumps into the cargo hold of a moving plane during the finale, which shouldn't have been doable.

The list goes on; it's not the most logical of films. Having said this, Carry-On makes it easy to overlook this thanks to the confidence and sincerity with which it provides its thrills, and because the interplay between Egerton and Bateman is so entertaining. As such, logic be damned, this movie just works.
