3. Dune: Part Two - The Complete Lack Of Substance

Dune Part Two
Warner Bros. Pictures

Dune: Part Two is in a similar boat to its predecessor. It's a cinematic tour-de-force, an incredible piece of image and sound... that will make you feel nothing whatsoever on an emotional level.

To be fair, the film does have a twisty and layered plot filled with Game of Thrones-esque political intrigue, so this isn't to say that Part Two is lacking on a narrative level necessarily. Rather, it's a movie that might leave some viewers cold, given that there's little in the way of emotion and it's difficult to care about any of the characters. The majority of them feel like little more than props to advance the story.

In the end, Dune: Part Two is (much like the first film) a movie that's more focused on the story world and themes rather than the characters. That's fair enough, but other big-budget spectacles such as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Star Wars Original Trilogy also focus overwhelmingly on world-building and thematic exploration, yet still find room for affecting character drama.

As much as die-hard fans call Dune: Part Two a masterpiece, that doesn't exactly feel earned given just how soulless Part Two actually is in so many ways.
