It may have sparked an immense backlash when the titular character's design was first revealed to the world, but since the fan response led to an unprecedented change, Sonic the Hedgehog has gone on to be a successful film franchise.

The end of the first outing saw the tease of Tails' appearance in the sequel, in which he was also joined by Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 went down a similar route with its post-credits scene, as it showed another popular character from the game series for the first time.

In response to the events of the movie, the military appear to turn to their ace in the hole: the Shadow Project. Shadow was created by Robotnik's grandfather in the games, and is essentially the anti-Sonic, equal in just about every facet of what makes the blue hedgehog special.

The set-up for the threequel is clear. Shadow will face off against Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, likely at the side of the returning Robotnik, though if the lore of the games is anything to go by, Shadow's allegiance will be far from concrete. However the character is handled, his appearance is something that Sonic fans should get a massive kick out of.
