Though technically the upcoming eighth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise has dropped the title of Dead Reckoning Part Two, Part One itself was very clearly approached as just that - the first part of the story. MI8 may no longer hold the same title, but it will still feed off Dead Reckoning all the same.

Though writer and director Christopher McQuarrie has since said there were never any thoughts to end on a cliffhanger, there were still plenty of plot threads left open, ready to be picked up again when Ethan Hunt returns to screens.

The impossible mission in question in this particular outing was accomplished when Hunt stole the key to the Entity from Gabriel. But with the latter still breathing by the time the credits rolled, there is no doubt this was just round one between them. Then there is how Hayley Atwell's compelling wildcard Grace will fit into proceedings.

This movie was approached by McQuarrie and Tom Cruise, as the director put it, to dare the audience to not want to come back. It may not have been a traditional cliffhanger like some on this list, but after watching Dead Reckoning, no one is going to want to miss out on Mission: Impossible 8.
