10 Recent Plot Twists That Changed Movie Franchises Forever

8. John Connor Dies - Terminator: Dark Fate

Terminator: Dark Fate may have been a bit of a mess but you have to commend the filmmakers for trying something different. Firstly, the movie killed off the franchise's hero, John Connor. Secondly, he died... in the first scene! Because John Connor is destined to win the war against The Machines, fans were left speechless watching humanity's last hope meet his maker five minutes into the movie.

Although this could've been a really bad idea, having John Connor bite the dust kind of works. In Dark Fate, Sarah Connor tracks down a woman called Dani, who she believes will bear the child of the new Resistance leader. Eventually, Sarah learns Dani herself is destined to become the new saviour of humanity.

Because the recent Terminator films have gotten extremely repetitive, it was a nice change to see someone besides John Connor revered as mankind's last hope. Even if the inevitable follow-up decided not to follow Dark Fate's continuity (which is likely), it would be refreshing to have a story that doesn't hinge on whether John Connor lives or dies for the umpteenth time.
