6. The Original Candyman Has Returned - Candyman
1992's Candyman centres around a Black man, Daniel Robitaille, who was killed by a mob for having an interracial relationship. Being reborn as a vengeful spirit, Daniel goes on a murder spree if anyone dares to say his moniker "Candyman" in front of a mirror five times.
The slasher was genuinely unsettling and Tony Todd's performance as the titular character received universal praise. But because the two sequels were god-awful, the time felt right to reboot the series.
In the 2021 version, the Candyman is Sherman Fields - a man who was killed by the police after being falsely accused of giving out razor-laced candy to children. When the lead character, Anthony, hears this tale, he finds himself being tormented and possessed by Sherman's spirit to exact vengeance on those who wronged him.
Not only that, but it establishes the Candyman legend as not being tied to one person, but multiple victimised Black men throughout the decades.
The film does a satisfying job at updating the legend of the Candyman, and even throws quite a twist at the end. In the final scene, Anthony transforms into Daniel Robitaille, aka Tony Toddy's original Candyman incarnation. Robitaille's appearance may have been brief but it proves that, even after 30 years, his work is far from finished.
