Content creation has been a viable career path in recent years, so it's no surprise to see modern horrors like Sissy doing a deep dive on the concept.

This Shudder Original follows lifestyle vlogger, Cecilia, whose carefully curated life begins to unravel during a weekend away with old friends.

At first, it feels like Sissy has bitten off more than it can chew, since it tries to juggle multiple genres while also delving into complex themes, like online identity and toxic positivity. Fortunately, Sissy never collapses under its own ambition, jumping from one idea to another seamlessly.

The jarring tone shift works in Sissy's favour, since the film can play out as a slow-burning psychological thriller one moment, making it more heart-racing when it veers into grisly horror territory. This juxtaposition makes the light-hearted moments ironically tense, since it's only a matter of time before things take a nasty turn.

Sissy deceptively feels like it's following a by-the-numbers structure, when it's actually deeply unpredictable. No matter what's happening, viewers won't have a clue what to expect right up until the closing credits.
