10 Remakes That Were Better Than The Originals

6. True Grit

Another original that lots of people - mostly people's dads - will stick up to defend is the 1969 John Wayne-starring Western, True Grit. Notably heralded is it for winning Wayne his solitary Oscar, the original was nevertheless outshone almost entirely by The Coen Brothers' 2010 treatment, with the pitch-perfect casting of Jeff Bridges in Wayne's shoes making for a thoroughly enjoyable, vastly superior ride. Hewing closer to the tone and narrative of the source material, The Coens' film makes of protagonist "Rooster" Cogburn a more well-rounded, developed soul, tortured internally - signified by his alcoholism - but also crassly witty, and ultimately, quite the shot with his pistol. Though some might be reluctant to admit it, Bridges does match the gravitas of Wayne's performance, but what really allows this Grit to pull out ahead of the original is the supporting performances; Hailie Steinfeld is the better Mattie Ross (and alongside Bridges, also received an Oscar nomination for her work), and Matt Damon plays it agreeably close to the chest as the film's prime comic relief.
